Tweaker - Happy Child (feat. Will Oldham)
I got really into Tweaker (A.K.A. Chris Vrenna) for a while, in that period where I was really obsessed with anything Nine Inch Nails related. I had no idea who Will Oldham was at the time, but it definitely primed the pump for when my indie friends started recommending him to me later.
Oldham reprised his guest performance on Tweaker’s second album, but by then Vrenna was building his brand as a remixer who provided a very specific version of “weird”, and the result was rather more predictable and less interesting.
The gist of The Attraction to all Things Uncertain, is that Vrenna more or less storyboarded the album, and the guest vocalists wrote the lyrcis based around those themes. So the odd emotions and distrubing plot are as much a collaboration as the weird aesthetic.
Bonnie Prince Billy - The World’s Greatest (R. Kelly cover)
Amazing cover
It’s kinda weird how well the lyrics fit. Will Oldham rules.
Tweaker - Ruby (feat. Will Oldham)
a list of bands i have attempt to collect every scrap of their recorded everything:
Tweaker led me to finally appreciate Will Oldham, after years of hearing his howls and off-key wailing from the tinny, small computer speakers of my coworkers. His collaborations with Chris Vrenna (tweaker) frame his voice completely differently.
