nine inch nails - “and all that could have been”

please, take this and run far away
far away from me i am tainted
the two of us were never meant to be
all these pieces and promises and left behinds
if only i could see
in my nothing
you meant everything, everything to me
gone fading everything
and all that could have been

Nine Inch Nails - The Becoming

Favorite Album is another nebulous target.  Most of my years growing up, I thought it was Dark Side.  Operation Mindcrime and Master of Puppets were 2 albums that I latched onto early, and hard.  There are plenty of intervening albums that have commanded my attention, but at the moment, The Downward Spiral is the one that feels the least dated, and fits together as the best whole.  And it’s probably the one that I’ve bought the most times.  Also this is like the 3rd time I’ve posted NIN this month - a good sign that what he’s doing really plugs into my brain.

First kiss, while listening to this song.  listened to the EP on repeat the whole way home.  Those of you following along at home (Maths!) yes, that makes me a late bloomer.

Nine Inch Nails: Just Like You Imagined

There are a lot of songs that are keyed in to specific places, and listening to them again bring up that memory immediately and with great clarity.  However most of those memories are specific only in a visual/contextual sense, I don’t actually remember the name of the place.

This song, though - reminds me of a specific stretch of Bloomingdale road, near where I grew up.  I was playing a mix tape while driving with my dad.  For the first time, ever, he said he really liked something I was listening to, and asked what it was.  I immediately freaked out because

  1. he’d been deriding my music for 18 years, non-stop
  2. Nine Inch Nails were much derided by fundamentalist christians everywhere, and where the devil-music-du-jour.

I responded that it was Trent Reznor, which seemed to appease him - and wasn’t far off, the mix tape also had Driver Down from Lost Highway.

Aaron Sorkin + David Fincher + Trent Reznor + Atticus Ross

I’ve always loved David’s work but quite honestly I wondered what would draw him to tell that story. When I actually read the script and realized what he was up to, I said goodbye to that free time I had planned. Atticus Ross and I have been on a creative roll so I asked him if he wanted to work on this with me and we signed on.

ok.  I’m excited now.

I’m just confused. I love Reznor’s contributions to Se7en with remixes, but I just don’t know what to think about this whole Facebook movie thing.

Will “March of the Pigs” play during the Farmville scene?

ok, nine inch nails = over.  se7en = remix played during the title, not scored by reznor.  Lost Highway = soundtrack curated by Reznor, he contributed 2 pieces (1 very short) to the score (the score was primarily handled by Angelo Badalamenti).  lastly: The Perfect Drug = inspired by Lost Highway, but not used in the soundtrack.

So really, I’d follow David Fincher pretty much anywhere, despite the movie sounding completely not-my-thing from any other angle.  Trent Reznor’s work for a Lynch movie (in addition to the Quake soundtrack) makes me pretty excited to see him do a whole film.  Especially after Ghosts I-IV, which is a soundtrack for a movie that plays in my head.

NIN - Hurt (video)

That’s definitely where I remember it from, but given the number of other places I’ve seen it pop up, I’m wondering if it’s some public domain thing that’s older.
