Far - Man Overboard

Today’s driving home music: Far’s Water and Solutions. This album is the grilled cheese and tomato soup of music - my comfort food.

perfect description of the album.  not as challenging as Tin Can… or Listening Game, but every bit delicious.

so, this is a thing, now?

New End Original - Hostage

So, I’ve listened to the new Far album a bit, and it’s not hitting me quite as much as Jonah has in the past.  This could be that I’m old, and no longer emo.  Or that Jonah’s old, and no longer emo.  Or it could be that reunions never recapture the fire of a band that burned out rather than fading away.  For the most part, the songs feel closer to the stuff from Gratitude, rather than Far or even Jonah’s solo stuff (onelinedrawing, New End Original).  I think mostly it’s me, though.  I doubt that even if they put out a new Tin Can With String To You, it wouldn’t hit me the same.

This is my favorite Jonah song.  Job’s Eyes (the one they used in that Buffy episode) is a close second.

So uh, this came out, finally.  I missed that happening.

FAR - Really Here

I noticed it when I walked out
My small white world
was closing down
I wondered, I would always wonder
Why I am always sober
and everyone is loaded
and it gets old
Well i bow out now
I refuse
So what if I waver, I fall
I'll always
I will always notice
Speak up when I'm called on
Everyone gets older
Oh well
I'm not really here

I love far.  And Jonah.  unfortunately Jonah only seems to tour Austin during SXSW, when I’ve already spent my show budget on SXSW wristbands.

Far - Man Overboard

#13 on the seemingly infinite list of favorite songs because Bee asked for five and I can’t stop.

Far was a little known band out of Sacramento. I swear, I think I know maybe five people who have heard of them, and two of those people hate them.

Their album Water and Solutions remains one of my favorite albums ever. I think what I love most about it is Jonah Matranga’s voice. He sounds tired and worn out. While that might not sound like a compliment, it works Far. There’s such a rawness, such jagged edges that it all comes off as imperfect and sometimes imperfection is just what you’re looking for.

This song. I’m not sure what it’s really about but for me it’s about getting derailed, about having these grand dreams about your life and the things you’re going to accomplish and getting lost along the way. And the way he sings it, it’s almost painful sometimes. But it’s poignant in its painfulness, and sometimes it reminds me that I need to get back on board.

‘Open Areas’ was the name of the book he never wrote…
We paved the roads
We really blanketed everything
We never…
He tried the West
He really studied the signs
He never…
Man overboard!

Jonah’s voice is pretty much guaranteed to cause your heart to bleed if you have any interest in that style of music at all.  Water and Solutions hasn’t weathered as well as Tin Can With String to You, for me, though.

Far - All Go Down (acoustic)

This was my introduction to Jonah Matranga’s voice.  Sam and Pete had been going on about Far for a while, and when I finally got DSL at my apartment, I set about finding this band with an ungooglable name.  Their proper albums were good, but it was this song that really showed Jonah’s bleeding-heart-inducing voice.
