Time lapse video of Cabrini Green housing project in Chicago being demolished. Boing Boing
when i lived in chicago, cabrini green was the most infamous of the “bad” parts of town. it was there that 9 year old “girl x” was raped, choked, poisoned, covered with graffiti and left for dead. i would always see it from the el and wonder what it was like.
Oh my god, it’s done.
Wow. finally.
Watched this twice, once without sound and once with, and both times I’ve nearly cried at my desk. I’ve been trying to figure out why - Cabrini was kind of the placeholder for all of the “chicago is so scary” fears that were instilled in us suburban kids.
Sweet merciful crap that food was amazing.
Always meant to eat there, but never did. Despite living like 3 blocks from it.

Apropos of nothing, really. I saw a Kuma’s burger on fuckyeahchicago, and I recently posted that pic of their whiskey taps. Damn I wish I was there right now.
What part of Chicago isn’t bicycle friendly besides wintertime? I lived in Philadelphia, and being as close to Chicago as I am, I’ve noticed no difference.
Please elaborate.
Sorry, that was meant exactly the opposite. I’ll go revise the post to make it more clear. Chicago > Austin when it comes to the bike friendly. Even in the winter, I’ll take biking in Chicago over biking in Austin.
For my Austinite peeps: Austinite bike culture trumps Chicago, but it does so largely because there are so many obstacles to biking in Austin. e.g.:
“I love your love of Chicago. Why aren't you there anymore?”

lots of reasons. weather, people, hyper-segregation, lack of clean/green space, etc. it was definitely a difficult decision, I grew up there, went to school at UIC, it was my ideal city for a long time.
However, now living in Austin, I think there’s a lot better that could be expected of an American city without sacrificing Chicago’s super-urban qualities: density, walkability, bike-friendliness, public transit

This was 2-3 hours out of every day for me all through college. It’s a good thing I didn’t have last.fm then. Else my top artists would be Tori Amos and Sarah McLachlan. By the time I left school, I could fall into a heavy sleep by the time my ticket was punched, and wake up on cue, 5 minutes from my stop.
