Bright Eyes - The Calendar Hung Itself
This is easily the most emo song I can truly say that I love. And it bothers me calling Conor emo, but dammit, listen. Part of it is yes, nostalgia (wow, he’s grown up, huh?) but part of it is that’s it’s a very good song. I almost want to call it a guilty pleasure, but I don’t believe in those. Nevertheless, there’s a bit of inner conflict, since part of me sort of hates this song.
This is the song that got me into Bright Eyes. The lyrical content brilliantly captures puppy love obsesssion. The driving acoustic guitar is an aesthetic that I’ll always love (c.f. failure - pillowhead, converge - hanging moon).
Bright Eyes - The Calendar Hung Itself
I will never be ashamed of having liked Bright Eyes. Conor used to write stuff like this - brilliant and poetic, but decidedly unhinged and teen-angsty (as he was a midwestern teen). You can mock latter day Conor all you want, when his lyrics turned hopeful and sappy, after he bifurcated his aggression into side projects, and watered down bright eyes, and then started using his name as he rose into national media fame. But his first albums and EP’s are still brilliant.
“I want a lover I don’t have to love
I want a boy who’s so drunk he doesn’t talk
Where’s the kid with the chemicals?
I’ve got a hunger and I can’t seem to get full
I need some meaning I can memorize
The kind I have always seems to slip my mind”
