There are all sorts of weird things around this economic inequality. Because record sales are based on the number sold to stores and not returned, stealing physical copies means that a) the artist gets paid b) your theft counts towards the sales for that artist.
They do keep track of the artists that get stolen the most often, though. (NIN used to rank highly on that list).
